Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

We had a beautiful Thanksgiving with our friends. One of Phil's daughters came to visit from Utah, with her boyfriend, and we took them with us to our 'Red Neck Friendsgiving' celebration.  You have to remember I live in a very rural area, and we celebrate at a friend's ranch.  We eat in the shop, and 'celebrate' by blowing up pumpkins - outdoors.  Serious fun. This year I managed to make my chocolate pumpkin cheesecake, which was a big 'win' for me, personally.  My only 'setback' (health issues related) was I almost fell trying to get it out of the oven.  My balance is not 100% yet. Sometimes I forget I am temporarily 'off' my normal. 


I'm trying my best to not start decorating for Christmas, and just savor these last days of Thanksgiving.

 However, crafting is another story.  This is prime crafty time!

My 'December Daily' group (online) is hosting a Christmas Card swap, so today I made my two cards to get sent off tomorrow.  One is going to Washington, and the other to Australia. 

The other 'Christmas' things I have been doing are uploading all of my favorite 2017 photos to Snapfish for a few gift projects.  This was a two-day project!  I had to download all my camera photos first, sort them by month, then upload the ones I wanted.  Ha. Hours.

And, on Friday, I received my family Christmas Card - also made in Snapfish.  I know, right?   I have my cards!  Last year I didn't get them until December 20th.  This year I wanted to make sure I got them out early!

Right now, I am just taking it easy, recuperating and getting my health back, one day at a time. And, since walking and bending and any 'up and down' movement with my legs takes a lot of effort, it is easy to 'not' decorate.

Speaking of movement, last night I went to church with Phil.  We went up and down the 'back' stairs, because there are less stairs than at the front of the Cathedral.  And, I did it!  I made it up, and I made it down.  Stairs have been my enemy.

 I love our church, St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Baker City, Oregon. Both of my children were baptized in this church, about 18 years ago.  And, a repose for the soul was said for my mother, Grace, which happened to be on my 55th birthday.  I have cried in this church when my soul ached, and, I have cried in this church with tears of joy when I was thankful for everything in what I consider a full and happy life. 

So, there you have it. 

Here's to savoring all we have to be thankful for.

The Card Concept 79 - Giving Thanks

I got up bright and early today (well, yes, I wake up early anyway, but today I made an effort to get up much earlier) to get my Card Concept 79 project completed before hitting the road. 

My entry below was inspired by the neutral colors above - mainly the white pumpkins and gray.  And, the style I am using from the Card Concept blog is Style #2: Clean and Layered with white space.

Stamp Used:  Pumpkin from the Hero Arts Set 'Month November' from 2008 (I collected about half of the months!).

Other Supplies: Simon Says Stamp 'Giving Thanks' steel craft die; Patterned Paper from Cocoa Daisy September kit; twine from Stampin' Up, and cardstock from Stampin' Up, Copic marker #C0 use for the gray frame around the pumpkin and on the 'thanks', and pumpkin image stamped with Archival Ink 'watering can'.

About Today's Adventure:
Our weather forecast is showing a 'warmer day' today, as in the 60's, which is the highest temp for this past week. However, right now?  It's currently 25 degrees out!  Yet the sun is shining and our goal is to take a road trip, hike, have a picnic and chase fall colors. 

First up?  A stop at our favorite bakery to pick up Halloween treats to send off to my two college kids, and of course, a little sample snack for us!

As mentioned before, I am following Kathy's #dailymarker30day challenge.

The first photo is from coloring the Hero Arts background stamp on day #17 of the challenge, with Thanksgiving in mind. 

And, today, day 19, I finished the card. The background morphed quite a bit, eh?

I used Vintage Photo Distress Ink to turn it brown.

This card is actually getting sent to my Aunt Rachel.  She sent a beautiful box of my Grandma Marina's treasure to me: a knit sweater that my Grandma made (it fits beautifully), one of my Grandma's crocheted doilies, another recipe of my Grandmothers (to add to my collection), and a lovely letter from my Aunt on how all of these things made their way to me.

What a treasure.  My Grandmother died earlier this year, in January, at the well lived aged of 104.  She was one amazing woman.  I traveled to California  and was able to see a lot of my Campos relatives, including my mother Grace.  The time and celebration spent with everyone will be treasured for many, many years.  We celebrated in Monterey, right on the ocean.  And we did a lot of story telling, many while drinking martini's in my little cottage room.

Well Spent Craft Time: Hero Arts Scramble & Kathy's 30 Day Color Challenge

Oh glorious craft time.  I have been stalking Kathy's 30 Day Color Challenge and finally decided to give it a try. I do not color well. When 'stamping' started entering the whole Copic marker blending thing, and water color thing, and then the lettering thing - I was left it the dust.   

But I do appreciate all the beautiful work others do!

So.. while I was searching for inspiration, I remembered my friends at the Hero Arts Flickr site, and paid them a visit.  And low and behold, I landed on a 24 hour scramble!  Ta Da!

There's nothing like a challenge to get me motivated.

I started by stamping a few images with different color Stazon Inks

I worked on one of the Hero Arts 657780  images. My colored image is on the left, the stamp is in the middle and the die to cut it out with is on the right.  My pens are shown below them.

I will not tell you how long this took me.  First, I found a good number of my inks and pens were dried out, and I had to dig deep through my supplies - including dusting off ink pads!  Oh. and the stamp/die set?  First time I have used it since buying it - in 2014?  Ha.

  But, since crafting counts as therapy, it was time well spent!

Today was 'set your clocks back' day.  Not my favorite.  I am a morning person whose internal clock goes off around 5 am, so this morning I was ready to make breakfast at 6am for Jake, yet  had to wait one.more.hour for the new 6am.  He has to leave here at 7am for the ranch, so yes, I still make breakfast for my 17 year old son, and it is on the clock.  Tick.Tock.

However, it's been a great day to get things done.  Like play in the Paper Smooches November Challenge 'Giving Thanks'.  It's been a while, right?  I 'stalk' all sorts of blogs and feeds, but sitting down to play?  Rare. 

So!  Here is what I used and did:

WCMD With a Moxie Fab Challenge

 

Today is WCMD and all sorts of challenges are going on.   After a day of self imposed honey do's around the house (single mama, been gone a week = boatloads of chores), I finally made a card. :)

Back story: This past week I was in Bend, Oregon for work, and a good friend watched my kittie Rosie, once again!  This is about the third time Katie has come to my rescue to check in on my gato.  And, I am overdue for giving a sweet thank-you gift (chocolates from a super cute little store in Downtown Bend) and card.  So, with that, I was inspired by the sketch. I actually love the way the patterned papers worked with this sketch.

It's Day 2 of 25 in 25 of  Teri's Challenge.  I made a Thanksgiving Card, using a Pink Paisley journaling card from the Amber Road collection.  Can you say hoarder?  I had two complete sheets until I cut into them in the wee hours this morning!

To say it's been a full day would be an understatement!
And, I am ready to crawl into bed with a very good book.  Now that's how I like to end a day!  Bliss.

WCMD - Studio Calico Sketch Challenge

On Sunday, I made a card for WCMD for one of the Studio Calico Challenges.  This one is based off one of three sketches that were provided.  

This baby took quite some time!  
It's not just any card.  It's one that involved 'lots of techniques'.

I flipped the sketch since my wooden banner faced to the right.  I LOVE the sketch!!!!   I need to make a ton of cards to get caught up and this one is perfect for lots of occasions!

Hooked on Hexagons - Moxie Fab Challenge

Two cards posted in one day?  I love days like today:)

As most of you crafty peeps know, hexagons are a HUGE trend right now. And, there just so happens to be a challenge going on at The Moxie Fab World   - the Hooked on Hexagons Challenge.

I popped up some hexagons from the My Mind's Eye Patterned Paper that I used as my base up with foam dots to add more dimension to the tag and 'embed' it into the card, or anchor it - whichever is the right term, I like the result.  Hope you do, too!

Oh So Pretty in Pink (plus a flower) - Shabby Tea Room Week #124 Challenge

I had a wedding reception to attend last night at the local golf course.  Oh what a beautiful summer evening with the waxing moon overhead!  The seating was outdoors, and along with the fabulous food, wonderful music, and a great friend I haven't seen for years (she and I were pals during my AAUW years), it was a perfect night to be a 'grown up' (OK, for 2 hours).

The happy couple is in their late 50's or early 60's, both have been previously married, and since they opted out on gifts, I made a card.

Too bad my 'bright idea' didn't launch until an hour before I had to get ready, and thank goodness for challenges to get your creativity flowing! 

I was inspired by This week's challenge over at The Shabby Tea Room .  Challenge #124 is to use the colors in the photo and add a flower.  Here is the photo:

Hello everyone!

Here is another layout for a challenge over at Core-dinations - right HERE which ends tonight, at midnight!  I am so glad they kept the challenge open for a few extra days.  I work full-time and don't have much leisure time!


The Photo: Is of Sami, getting ready for our road-trip to Portland for Spring Break this past March.  She was all packed up and grabbed her cozy teddy bear to keep her company.  So adorable!

The Journaling: In white uniball pen reads 'Sami, I love that at 14 you still cuddle with your stuffed animals.  I'll take that as a small blessing'.

The Goods: Core'dinations Cosmo Cricket Neutrals Collection (light brown panel, dark grey mats,dark grey title, black butterflies), Core'dinations Jenni Bowlin Vintage Brights Collection (main layout cardstock piece with embossed butterflies);  Basic Grey Origins canvas tag and epoxy sticker; Tim Holtz Butterfly grunge board pieces; Kerri Bradford Small Blessings studio cut file.

Tools Used: Silhouette Cameo to cut out title, Martha Stewart Butterfly punch, EK Success border punch, Uniball white pen, SU distressing tools, SU sanding block.

Techniques:  I watched the Hard Core videos and loved the use of sanding over grungeboard shapes to create a watermark image; which is what I did with the two butterflies on the right panel, and I lifted the white journaling from one of the videos as well!  I sanded the embossed butterflies on the left side of the main layout.  I also outlined one of the watermark butterflies on the right panel to make it stand out better.  And, I distressed the larger panels, and tore the grey panel at the bottom.  The title is cut with the Cameo.

 Thoughts:  I love these colors together!  They make for a great 'natural' layout, which I am really loving right now.  I love 'touching' this layout!  The cardstock has so much texture... the weight feels like canvas and I really want to hang it on a wall!

Scraptastic Challenge - Banners & Staples Layout

Oh my gosh.  This is the second layout in a week that I have made and I am so happy to be getting my crafty zen on!  After moving, and trying to setup my new home, it was hard to let go of my old craft room and embrace my new space in my smaller house (aka bedroom and corner office area).  I moved in October, and here we are, in March!  Five months.... it took five months to finally click.  I mean, even taking photos of layouts and cards in new spots is a big adjustment!

So.. let's get on with this project, shall we?

About the Challenge and Technique(s):
I created this layout for the third March 2012 Scraptastic Challenge which is to use banners and staples.  By the way, I started getting kits from Scraptastic back in October - I love the colors and mixes and matches from one month to another... and for April?  Stamps!
Anyway, the banner was created using the Silhouette Cameo (happy happy dance!).  I downloaded a banner
file from Silhouette for 99 cents, ungrouped the images, and cut the ones I wanted at various sizes and shapes using cardstock and papers from the March 'Be Amazing' Scraptastic Kit - 'and Kraft cs from the October 'Blissful Sunshine' kit.   Then, I just started adding embellishments from both kits.  I also used some Stampin' Up brads.  Oh.. and there are SEVEN staples on this page. 

The photo?  That's me.. two weeks ago after Sami and I and one of her friends got make-overs.  Me.. with all my wrinkles squinting into the sunshine.  The glorious sunshine!  A rare day indeed. and it was windy....

I can't wait for spring.  It's been dreary around here - cloudy, rainy or snowy!

My Interpretation of the Sketch

Products Used:  MME: Lost and Found Union Square designer papers, 'moments' buttons, 'favorite' brads, 'Beautiful Day' Trims - twine, and die cut accessories.  I also used Cosmo Cricket tiny type letters.  And, my journaling was written in word, printed out on regular paper, and distressed with Ranger Distress ink and adhered to one of the Union Square designer papers.

Dorothy had it right.  There’s no place like home.  I found that out when I ‘went home’ after 20 something years to help celebrate the life of one of our own. A bittersweet reunion, you might say.

This group of friends, ‘Our Gang’, as we call ourselves, has known each other for decades.  We tore up the town when we were in High School and in our early 20’s.  We caused a lot of mischief and ironically we would be appalled if our children ever walked in our footsteps!  Gradually we went our own ways – college, other towns, other States, other lives, and new families.  And here we are, 25 years later. Still the same.  Still caring for one another.  Still there for each other.  And still, family. 

What lessons have I learned?  I learned that my heart can still skip a beat when I am in the same room with some of ‘our boys’.  I found out that my BFF, will always be my BFF, and through all the curve balls we have been thrown, we will always love each other.  I found out, that I can be myself, in my own skin, and love it, and this group just accepts me for who I am.  And, I found out, that no matter what happens in my own personal life, no matter how far removed from ‘our home’, this group of special friends, will always be there to celebrate life, as we each choose to live it.    Andi.  November 18, 2010.

Getting personal - more on the layout story... Last month one of our friends passed away from pancreatic cancer.  We all knew she was ill, and had planned a get-together to celebrate with her, the last weekend of October.  She wanted to celebrate in Half Moon Bay, CA, which is 'over the hill' from where we all grew up in San Carlos, CA.  We planned this for about a month, and that very week, on Wednesday, our good friend Judy passed away.  Those of us that could, still stuck with the plan to celebrate.  And, I am so glad we did.  It was a very emotional weekend - most of my friends are avid SF Giants Fans, and the world series was going on as well!   I flew down from Oregon, and another one of our friends flew in from Washington.  And, I landed in Sacramento and stayed with and carpooled with my BFF Erin whom I have known since I was my daughter's age!  12!!!!   We were maids of honor for each other's weddings. 

 

Anyway, this last month has been very emotional for me.  I got to catch up with great friends, see my BFF and say goodbye to one of our own.  You know, we miss so many opportunities to just be with the people we grew up with - the people that really know us - because of our own individual lives. And you know what?  Life is short.  Take those opportunities.  You will be so glad you did!

Moxie Fab - I Want to Ride My Bicycle Challenge #2

So... I had a moment of inspiration and was playing around with some more bicycle goodies for the Moxie Fab I Want to Ride my Bicycle Challenge, along with the packaging from some Prima flowers, and the bicycle images on the back of a Studio Calico promo piece. There I was, moving things around, and what was to be a card was morphing into a cool title and then I remembered the photos from Cycle Oregon - when Sami's 5th grade class got to ride in the race for a couple miles! Way cool!!!! And, that my friends, is how this layout came to being!

The challenge requires that you use a bicycle in an innovative way. I'm going for the 'bikes as part of a title' technique (It's new! Flashy! Bold! Moxie Fab? Um.. Yeah.). What you don't see, is my attempt at making watermarks on the cardstock with Versamark and the back of the bike tires from the cool Jolee's sticker. The current 'I Want to Ride My Bicycle' challenge over at the Moxie Fab World is to 'Create a project (card, gift bag, tag, layout, home decor item, mini-book cover, etc.) that incorporates a bicycle in an innovative way.' The Challenge ends June 28th -so lots of time to still play!

BTW: There were NO Bicycle stamps at Michael's when I was in the big city this last Thursday. But somehow, I came home with a ton of stuff I wasn't looking for! Oy... I know if I went to Archiver's I could have scored on the super cute one by Hero Arts! CURSES for not driving an additional 30 minutes in nasty construction traffic with my husband's truck! (long story... I have truck and trailer issues - ranch business).

So, my 'innovative way' is the citrus wheels. I gave this one some thought. Kinda lame, I know but there I was, thinkin' of summer... and summer sweetness, which lead to a sweet ride. And gosh, summer colors and tasty things! So... there you have it. Citrus goodies. I added a few spokes with a black sharpie.

And, yes this is a hybrid card. I'm dipping my toe into digital stuff, and trying to make things without getting frustrated!

The challenge this round over at Caardvark's is to create a Wedding Card - doing your best work and taking a great photo. I'm afraid the photo part will sink me.. I still just have my itty bitty HP Photosmart R827 (7.2 megapixels, 3x optical zoom). It's a point and shoot number. I asked Santa for my dream camera.. but alas, I must have been dreaming!

See those little champagne flutes? They are engraved with bride and groom.. Alas, I zoomed in on them, and no luck getting the fine print.
