Book Club Read for AugustFirst - let me explain my book club. We are a rather laid back, eclectic mix-match of various women in our County. I might be the youngest. Actually, I am certain I am. We don't have rules and we don't read the same book. We each pick our own to read, if we so desire, and share our findings with our group which meets the first Wednesday of the month.
My friend Ann (the one undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer) is our organizer. She is the brains behind our outfit, and the one who had the great idea of 'just doing what we want'. Oh how I love that woman.
You see, I love to read. It is one of my passions. Give me a book, or a stack of books by my bedside and I am a happy camper. My weakness is I love to purchase my books. I am not good at going to the library and checking books out. And I don't save my books. Very rarely. I take them back to the bookstore for a credit. Similar to a library, but only different.
This month I took Sami and Jake to the Library (well, in August) to check out books. You know, do the right thing. I came home with four books, Sami one. She read hers. I 'discarded 2' of mine, finished the one featured here, and am devouring my fourth.
BUT I do not Like Library Books! They are gross! They have yucky stuff in them - like food stains, and the spines are busted, and I feel 'yucky' turning their dirty little pages! ACK!
So, my attempt at being frugal is now over. Back to the bookstore, and back to the book....
So, this month I read Balac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie. This book is awesome! I love it! And let me tell you, it is always horrific for me to discover atrosities that have occurred in my lifetime in another country. This one takes place in the 1970's during the Chinese Revolution.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Dai Sijie, and published in 2000 in French and in English in 2001. Its original French title is Balzac et la petite tailleuse chinoise.

Did you ever read the book I sent you??? Happy reading! I don't like to get my books from the library either, I did try but out of 10 books they had ZERO, and and they all had a wait list, so I think I'll be going to amazon.com again real soon!!
Andi, that is so funny! I never though of library books that way -- although now, thanks to you, I might.
It's bad enough I can't stand the bedspreads in hotels, now I have to fear library books, too...LOL!

I love to read and I do go to my library. They have a new book section which you don't even have to reserve. It is first come first serve. So there is usually a good selection of books. :) Of course my cardmaking has eaten into my reading time. Thanks for the book suggestion.
Andi--HA! I'm laughing and rolling out of my chair! You must understand, I cringed when I read your post title. I'm saying to myself...ick, I can't even read about library books-LOL. You see, I worked for a book company for many years..I know the horrors of books and the germs they hold....GROSS!
OMGosh I am so glad I have found someone else that thinks that about library books! My book habit is expensive, but I do hate to think of where library books may have been read by the previous borrower! Yuk yuk yuk! I'm also one of those awful people who don't like to lend out their books as they come back all damaged and doggy eared :(
Oh, what a wonderful book club. I love the set up. You have to read Women of the Silk and it has a sequel, too. Some of my faves. I love the library and never even thought about it the way you describe. I like the idea that the book has traveled and visited other readers, so we are connected in some way.
I am with you-I love books. The problem is, when I am reading, NOTHING else in my house gets done. I have to be very strict with myself!

Oh let me just indulge myself and tell you how much I LOVE this book!! I have the version with the red shoes on the cover, found it in our library's 'sale room' - I think I paid $1.00 for it and good heavens, $1.00 well spent. I made both my kiddos read it too - what an amazing, funny, touching and enlightening book about the 'cultural' revolution. (my kiddos are both in high school, so I figured it was appropriate enough).
